¿What is a gastric balloon?

A non-surgical procedure that helps with weight loss by placing a balloon in the stomach to create a feeling of fullness and reduce food intake.

The gastric balloon, also known as an intragastric balloon, is a non-surgical method to assist with weight loss. It involves placing a soft silicone balloon inside the stomach and filling it with saline solution or air to create a feeling of fullness and reduce appetite.

Procedure

Placement: The balloon is inserted into the stomach through the mouth using an endoscopy under light sedation.

Inflation: Once in place, it is filled with saline solution, usually between 400 and 700 ml. Some balloons can also be filled with air.

Duration: The balloon remains in the stomach for approximately six months. During this time, the patient must follow a diet plan, exercise routine, and medical monitoring.

Removal: After the indicated period, the balloon is deflated and removed through another endoscopy.

Who is it recommended for?

  • People with a BMI between 30 and 40

  • Patients who have not been able to lose weight through diet and exercise alone

  • Individuals committed to lifestyle changes and medical follow-up

Effectiveness

Results depend on the patient’s commitment to diet and lifestyle changes. It generally helps achieve significant weight loss, although maintaining it requires continuing healthy habits after the balloon is removed.
